Mid-Season Update

Wow, where did the time go?

As we approach the end of our first month of play in SunCreek LL's 2010 season, I am thankful for the coaches and volunteers that are the structure and backbone of baseball and t-ball for 400 kids in our community. 400 kids! That's bigger than some schools! We could not do it without volunteers who make the baseball and t-ball games a reality...from organization and equipment, to uniforms and safety, to field reservations and on-field teaching and coaching.

SunCreek currently has 32 teams, with kids aged 5-12. Our Majors level has two teams, the Giants and the Mariners, competing in a District 4 league with teams from Wolf Creek LL, Beaverton Area LL, Forest Grove LL, and Murrayhill LL. In addition, they are currently playing in the D4 "Jugs Pitching Machine" Tournament at Sunset Park.

The AAA level has six teams, all named after current minor-league ballclubs: Scrappers, Volcanoes, Bulls, Muck Dogs, Storm and Bats. They compete within SCLL, but have two weekends of playing other D4 teams. At the annual AAA "Jugs Pitching Machine" Tournament earlier this month, five of those teams advanced out of pool play.

Our six AA teams are named after National League clubs: Mets, Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants, Phillies and Cubs. They compete within SCLL and is our first level of kid pitch.

Single A baseball is our coach-pitch level, and features all American League club names: Angels, Rangers, Mariners, Athletics,Yankees, Red Sox, Royals and Orioles.

Finally, our ten T-Ball teams are named after National League teams: Marlins, Cubs, Reds, Phillies, Braves, Nationals, Cardinals, Brewers, Astros and Pirates.

Game schedules are available for all the teams under "Divisions/Teams" tab on the SunCreek Little League website. We are finding more and more volunteers contributing to the SCLL Facebook page with photos and game highlights; check it out at www.facebook.com/SunCreekLL.

Evaluations

SunCreek LL is hosting its annual Evaluations weekend today and tomorrow. If you are interested in playing Majors or AAA baseball, you must attend one of the following sessions:

February 21st or 22nd
10am-1pm
Westview High School (north parking lot/batting cage area)

We are excited to have 373 kids Registered to play baseball and T-Ball this spring. All of our softball players are now playing under the new Willow Creek Little League Softball charter that encompasses SunCreek, Wolf Creek and Cedar Mill LL's.

Majors and AAA will begin practices during the first week of March.

Beginning about March 1st, we will form up the AA and A teams, then finally, T-Ball Registration will close on March 8th and we can begin setting up those teams.

Hi SunCreek Little League, families and friends!

We are rolling along with Registration. Online sign-ups will continue through February 12th.

In addition, if you are interested in coaching, you must complete both a Volunteer Application and a Coaching Application, available under "handouts" on the website.

We are pleased to announce that our softball division has broken off and combined with Cedar Mill LL and Wolf Creek LL to form "Willow Creek Softball Little League!" Giving the girls' softball players control over their training, coaching, scheduling and postseason will help strengthen their program and help grow the teams. D4 LL Softball Moves to Semifinals

The District 4 Little League Softball tournament continues tonight with semifinal action on the main field at Alpenrose.

SunCreek LL will face Beaverton Area LL at 5pm.

Tigard vs. Sunset Park at 7:30pm.

Winners will play Friday at 7:30 for the District 4 Championship and automatic berth to the Little League Softball World Series.

The "SunCreek" 11/12 Softball All-Stars took to the field at Alpenrose last night as they continued in the 2009 Oregon District 4 tournament. Playing under SCLL, the girls from Cedar Mill, Wolf Creek, and SunCreek Little Leagues, lost to a tough Tigard team in Pool Play. SunCreek continues tonight at 5pm on Alpenrose main vs. Raleigh Hills/Sunset Park LL.

The "SunCreek" LL (11/12) All-Stars open District 4 tournament play tonight at Alpenrose, 5pm, versus Beaverton Area/Murrayhill LL. Our team is consists of players from the regular season "Willow Creek" team (girls from Cedar Mill, Wolf Creek and SunCreek Little Leagues) playing under the SunCreek banner.

The tournament continues all week: SunCreek will play at 5pm each night on Alpenrose main. Pool Play is through Wednesday, with single elimination beginning Thursday evening. Thanks coaches Russell Clapp and Marcia Turnquist!

11/12 All-Stars Almost Shock Murrayhill LL

While the score might not indicate it, the 2009 SunCreek Little League All-Stars gave Murrayhill Little League a scare tonight, finally losing 11-1 in the fifth inning. Behind the arm of Zane Chitwood, the MHLL sluggers were struggling to hit and score...

SCLL got on the board first when Zane knocked Sean L. home for the first run to be scored on MHLL in the entire tournament! In fact, the SunCreekers were the first team to go past four innings!

At the end of the night, the tournament was over for SunCreek, but it was a great showing and there was talk in the crowd about their hard play. Great job, guys.

A HUGE thanks to coaches Joe, Matt and Dave. As their sons are now 12 and moving on, we can't thank them enough for all they have given to SunCreek Little League.

We say thank you and good luck to all of our 12 year olds -- you wore the uniform with pride!

The 2009 SunCreek LL 9/10 All-Stars finished up their run through the Oregon District 4 tournament by taking second place, losing in the championship to Murrayhill LL, 7-1.

Behind the pitching of Josh, then Graham, the SunCreekers were boosted by their outstanding defense but struggled at the plate and finally pushed across their only run across in the bottom of the 6th inning when Andrew's double scored pinch-runner Reed.

I will post some more photos tomorow...good night and thank you to the kids, coaches and families for a great week in Lake Oswego. And I love my autographed baseball :)

11/12 All-Stars Lose A Close One

The SunCreek 11/12 All-Stars went back and forth with Cedar Mill LL yesterday afternoon, matching runs for runs, but couldn't hang on and lost 10-8 on Alpenrose East in their second game of Pool Play in the 2009 D4 Tournament. They continue playing tomorrow against Lake Oswego LL, 7:15pm, Alpenrose Main.

The final Oregon District 4 tournament kicked off today when the 11/12 All-Stars took to the fields at Alpenrose. The 2009 SunCreekers ran smack dab into a very tough Tigard LL team and were defeated 12-1, in the first game of Pool Play.

They will take on Cedar Mill LL Sunday at 3pm at Alpenrose. more pix soon...:)

The 9/10 All-Stars showed the heart of champions today when they scraped back from a 4-0 deficit, then blew open today's Oregon District 4 semifinal game with a 17-5 win over Lake Oswego Little League.

They advance to the Oregon District 4 Championship Game Sunday, July 12th, 6pm, Westlake Park versus Murrayhill Little League.

Game Recap

The SunCreekers fell behind 0-4 going into the top of the 4th inning when Asher's smash up the middle scored Andrew and Josh, and he later stole home, 4-3. Jayden's double scored Reed, who had become the special pinch runner for Ben, 4-4. Zac's double shot to right scored Jayden and Kyle smacked one past third base to score Zac. Kyle raced home on an error, and Hayden stole home, 8-4.

"SmAsher" continued to to do just that and knocked one in to right center for a triple. Graham's sacrifice fly brought Asher home, 9-4.

Lake O scored a run in the bottom of the 5th inning to make it 9-5. SunCreek broke it open in the top of the 6th inning with Kyle again ripping one up the middle scoring Zac (10) who has singled and stole around to third. Hayden walked, stole second and Eli singled in front of home plate. With the bases loaded, Josh singled bringing home Kyle (11) and Asher's fielder's choces scored Hayden (12). Graham and Jared scored on Zac's hit, and Kyle hit scored Jayden and Zac. Going into the bottom of the 6th: SCLL 17, LOLL 5.

The game ended with a brilliant double play by Josh who snagged a liner at short and swiftly threw out the LO baserunner on second.

9/10 All-Stars ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2009 SunCreek Little League 9/10 All-Stars smashed their way into the District 4 Championship game tomorrow with a win over Lake Oswego LL, 17-5.

SunCreek will play the winner of the Raleigh Hills LL vs. Murrayhill LL game taking place right now. I will do a game recap and I've got tons of pix...but I am heading up to watch the 11/12 All-Stars in their opening game today at 4:30pm, Alpenrose East vs. Tigard.

9/10 All-Stars Finish 2-1 in Pool Play

Zac S. picked up where Hayden H. left off last night and pitched a complete-game shut-out tonight as the SunCreek LL 9/10 All-Stars finished Pool Play in the 2009 District 4 tournament by beating Beaverton Area LL 12-0 in four innings.

With a 2-1 record, SunCreek will likely finish as the #2 seed from Pool A and will play Thursday, July 9, 7:30pm at Waluga Park.

Game Recap
For the third straight time, SCLL was the visiting team, but was unable to score in the top of the first inning. Graham I. made all three outs at second base in the bottom of the inning and Zac needed only 7 pitches.

In the top of the 2nd inning, Hayden led off with a triple and scored on Reed F.'s double. When Reed stole home for the first time of the evening (he would do it two more times :), the score was 2-0. Josh H. singled over the second baseman and scored on Andrew W.'s hit to center field. The scoring ended with Jayden H. knocking in Andrew: 4-0.

BALL didn't score in the bottom of the 2nd inning, but SCLL put six more runs up on the board: Reed stole home for the first run after Josh's hard smash moved him to 3rd base. Andrew's single scored Josh. Asher L. rocked a double to the fence that brought home Andrew. Asher scored when Jayden smacked a triple (8-0). Zac knocked home Jayden and scored on Hayden's single. After 3.5 innings, SCLL 10, BALL 0.

Andrew singled and was subbed as runner by Reed, who stole home to record run number 11. Jayden's single scored Asher, who had reached base on a walk; 12-0 going into the bottom of the 4th and that's how the game ended -- with some great bunt defense and a second win at Westlake Park for the SunCreek 9/10 All-Stars!

9/10 All-Stars Right the Ship and Win Game 2

Waiting for the game to start...

At Westlake Park in Lake Oswego tonight, the SunCreek LL 9/10 All-Stars roared back from Sunday's loss to defeat Pool Play opponent Southwest Portland LL 13-0 in four innings.

The game got off to a late start due to the 5:15 game between Cedar Mill LL and Lake Oswego LL going into extra innings. Unfortunately, most of my pictures didn't come out from tonight's game because of not wanting to use the flash. Of course, I am always happy to post photos from parents and fans :)

Game Recap

Jayden H. led off the game by smashing a double and moved to third on Kyle T.'s hard grounder. Hayden H.'s hit to left scored Jayden and Kyle stole home; SCLL 2-0.

SWPLL had three fly-ball outs in the bottom of the 1st inning off of pitcher Hayden: fly out to left, snagged by Kyle; fly-out to right, snagged by Reed F., and a high pop-up behind home plate, snagged by catcher Jayden.

Graham I.'s blast to center started off the top of the 2nd inning and he stole to third and scored on Jayden's triple. Zac S.'s hard grounder scored Jayden, and Zac scored on Reed's walk with the bases loaded. Josh H.'s shot to right scored two more. Reed stole home and Asher L.'s double scored Josh. SCLL up 9-0.

SunCreek scored three more in the top of the third when Jayden doubled, Jared R. laid down a beautiful bunt and they both scored on Hayden's double. Hayden stole home to give SunCreek a total of 12 runs.

In the top of the 4th inning, Graham led off with a single and Zac scored the final run on Kyle's single. Hayden shut down the SWPLL half of the inning with three strike-outs and the game was over, 13-0 in four innings.

The 2009 SunCreek LL 9/10 All-Stars took the lead into the 4th inning of their opening game this morning against Raleigh Hills LL, but couldn't hold on and eventually lost 15-5 at Westlake Park in Lake Oswego.

RHLL got on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning, but Jared R. stole home in the top of the 3rd to give SCLL its first run of the tournament. Zac S.'s mishandled hit scored Jayden H. and the SunCreekers went up 2-1 after three innings.

In the top of the 4th, Eli S. was hit by pitch, then Jayden smacked a double. Zac's double scored them both and he later scored after Kyle T. moved him to third base and Zac became run number five when he stole home: 5-1 going in to the bottom of the 4th.

Ben B.'s diving catch in right field was the defensive highlight in the 4th inning, as RHLL scored eleven runs and moved the score to 5-12.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, RHLL scored three more times to end the game: final score, 15-5.

SunCreek continues Pool Play action on Monday night against SWPortland LL at Westlake Park at 7:30pm.

The SunCreek LL 8/10 Honors team finished up their 2009 tournament on a beautiful July evening at Westlake Park with a loss to #1 seed Murrayhill Little League, 14-2. The stands were filled with supporters to cheer on our boys, who advanced out of Pool Play for the first time in a few years. Congrats to coaches Walter Fuller, Ben Nelson and Matt Dempsey for a great week of baseball, and especially the boys, for representing themselves and our league so well! GREAT JOB!

SunCreek fell to Beaverton Area LL tonight in their final Pool Play game of the 8/10 Honors 2009 Tournament, 6-0 at Westlake Park. With a record of 2-2, the team will wait for Wednesday's games to conclude to find out if they are competing in Friday's winner's bracket.

Meanwhile, over at Alpenrose, the 11/12 Honors posted an 18-8 win over Forest Grove LL in their third game of their tournament. The 11/12's conclude play tomorrow at 4pm on Alpenrose East versus Wolf Creek.

8/10 Honors vs. BALL: Recap

Brandon F. started on the mound tonight and promptly struck out the first three batters he faced. In the bottom of the inning, Eric P.'s single was the only offense, after Jason T. walked.

A lead-0ff single up by the middle by Tyler A. was the highlight of the 2nd inning, but he was left stranded, score 4-0 BALL.

Jason came in to pitch in the third and held them scoreless, and also with a GREAT catch of a screaming line drive! Jon B. ripped a triple to right/center in the bottom of the inning, but could not get home.

In the top of the 5th, Ben R. made a great catch in center, but BALL managed a run, 5-0. Robbie came in to pitch in the 6th inning, but BALL padded their lead with the final run of the game and held on for the 6-0 win.

Well, I attended the SunCreek 11/12 Honors game versus BALL last evening, but I forgot my camera. Ugh.... I was too far gone on the Sunset Highway to turn back...

Under sunny skies, and with the 9/10 All-Stars team cheering them on at Westlake Park, the SunCreek LL 8/10 Honors team jumped on the Lake Oswego Navy team in the top of the first inning and held on for a 10-8 win in their first game of the 2009 tournament.

The 8/10 Honors play again Sunday at 5pm versus Sunset Park LL.

Game Recap:

Asher N. led off the top of the inning with a single and later scored the first run of the game when Jason T. smacked him and Brandon F. home with a shot to right field. Eric P.'s single scored Jason, and later stole home to make the score 4-0. Tyler A.'s infield hit scored Galo B. and SunCreek finished their first half-inning with five runs!

LO scored two runs in the 1st and two runs in the 2nd inning when Brandon left the game with 41 pitches. In the top of the 3rd inning, Ryan K. walked and scored on Jason's double. Jason stole to third and scored on Eric P.'s single. Tyler's hard hit scored Eric, 8-4. Zach C.'s nice single over the shortstop scored Tyler and it was 9-4 going into the LO half of the 3rd inning, when Eric came in to pitch with Jason at catcher.

Neither team scored while Robbie H. then Jason, pitched through the 4th inning.

SunCreek scored its 10th run in the top of the 5th inning when Eric stole home, 10-4.

Robbie's opposite field single was the only offense in the top of the 6th inning. In the final half-inning of the game, Jason got the first batter to strike out and the second batter to fly out. LO then scored four runs on walks and hits, but SCLL held on for the 10-8 win after Ryan struck out the last batter of the game.

Alpenrose Day 2009

Alpenrose Dairy, in southwest Portland, is a dairy processing plant that has enough land to host three ballfields, a bicycle velodrome, a quarter midget racing track, not to mention Easter egg hunts and weddings. SunCreek Little League took over the ballfields yesterday, under sunny skies, and the complex was buzzing in all corners and families were enjoying everything except for an Easter Egg Hunt!

The day began with A Baseball (coach pitch) and a salute to some founding "fathers" of SCLL who happen to have a grandson playing in that game. The scoreboard and PA system was in full effect on the Main field as kids were introduced and "SunCreek LL Trivia" was announced between innings. The main field hosted baseball AND softball for the first time in a long time...

Our three AAA Baseball teams decided to forgo a league game and instead host the first ever "Triple A Team Challenge" with the kids broken up into four mixed teams. Two teams scrimmaged on the field while the other two "teams" participated in skills challenge activities in each of the sideline areas (throwing distance and pitching accuracy).

Following the Pirates vs. HiLL Red Sox game, Garrett H., an AA/Oak Hills player, pulled the winning ticket for our annual Raffle Fundraiser (congrats "Patricia" of Portland) and our nightcap matchup, Giants vs. Yankees, began...

Thanks to all the folks who came to Pizza Caboose last week to learn about and register for SunCreek Little League. We registered around 25 kids and were excited to see old faces and make new friends.

Parents had some great questions and I apologize for not getting more information out there...as I am new to running this league, and with many new volunteers, we are doing our best to put together all the pieces to run a 400 player youth sports league, plus manage equipment, coaches, fields, etc.

There is a "2009 Fact Sheet" available on the SunCreekLittleLeague.com website that covers lots of topics. Let me add some here:

THPRD Numbers
Many of you are new to youth sports in the area and may not be familiar with the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District. Because all but two of the fields used by SCLL are managed by THPRD, we are required to ask for your family's card number to participate in our league.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but this is a requirement as a youth sport affiliate of THPRD.

Evaluations
Players NEW to AAA and Majors must attend one of our Evaluations scheduled February 21st and 22nd. Mound Time Baseball has been kind enough to donate the use of their indoor facility for our Evaluations.

Formation of Teams
SunCreek LL strives to provide a low-cost, community-based baseball/softball program that is as family-friendly as possible. We try to form teams based on school attendance in our T-Ball, A, and AA levels.

At the AAA and Majors levels, evaluations are held to insure a distribution of talent amongst the teams. EVERY PLAYER WILL BE PLACED ON A TEAM.

Triple-A: If you are already on a AAA team, you may stay on that team. If you are new to this level, you will go through evaluations and a modified draft will be held. We cannot guarantee that player/coach requests will be honored, but we will do our best.

Majors: If you are already on a Majors team, you may stay on that team. If you are new to this level, you must go through evaluations. A traditional draft is held and you will be notified of your team around March 1st.

In 2009, we are looking to fill spots on the four Majors teams: Giants (manager Joe Chitwood), Yankees (manager Matt Brant), Pirates (manager Perry Peters), and Diamondbacks (manager Andy Sisavic).

Postseason Play
I am often asked about the differences between SCLL and Westview JBO. One big difference is that LL (for both baseball and softball) has regular season (roughly March 1st - June 15) and postseason play (roughly end of June until end of July). Players aged 9-12 can participate in District 4 Honors or All-Stars. All-Stars can continue to State, Regional and the World Series if they keep winning!

Further information regarding the commitment for postseason play will be posted in mid-May.

Summer/Fall Ball
An "extra" season of baseball is available in summer and fall and is considered instructional and standings are not kept. More information about summer and fall will be posted in June.

It's officially baseball and softball season!

OK, it's not OFFICIALLY official, but we are getting organized to provide the best possible playing experience for our local kids.

Here are some updates and highlights:

Registration for baseball and softball continues through February 21st, 2009. Go to the league website to register online.
OR, attend the "In-Person Registration & Information Night" on January 20, 7:30pm, at Pizza Caboose to pay by check and/or meet league officers and coaches.
Saturday, January 17 (8-10am), we will have a work party at West Union fields. Please join us as we continue improving this site.

What can you be doing while waiting for practices to start? Playing catch, of course :) Seriously, these dry afternoons are a perfect time to break out the ball glove, get it worked in, and start warming up your arms. Play catch and take grounders. Take some swings with that cold bat. Some catch and some swings will go a long way in getting your kids thinking about and ready for the season.

How 'bout a clinic?

Pacific University is hosting its 2009 Indoor Pitching and Catching Clinic on February 1st.

I love baseball...it's a simple game. However, it takes practice to play and understand this simple game :)

I hope you are reading this because you are always thinking about baseball, and though we are all busy for the next few weeks, January is the official beginning of pre-season in the Little League world, and you want to be ready.

Firstly, have you registered to play? Spring 2009 Registration for SunCreek Little League opens tomorrow and continues through February 21st, 2009. Evaluations for Majors and AAA players will also take place in February. I'll write more about that later, but in the meantime...

West Union Work Party #3

For the third consecutive Saturday morning, a crew of SunCreek Little League supporters spent 8-10am working at West Union. Base lines on Field 2 are looking downright professional, and the area between the snack shack and storage shed is now free of thorny bushes.

Thanks again to everyone who helped out. Erik Burros will be out again November 29th (8-10am) if anyone wants to burn off some pumpkin pie and do some shoveling and raking.

When the sun is shining in Oregon, where do you want to be? On a ball field, of course :)

Thank you to the folks who joined us at West Union Field this morning! Work was spread amongst base line repairs on field 2 and removal of blackberry bushes between the snack shack and the storage shed. Lots of folks make for quick work and great results.

We are so lucky to benefit from the volunteer hours of some dedicated volunteers, many of whom no longer have kids playing in SunCreek Little League. Thanks again!

Our board meetings are "hosted" by the board and general League business is conducted, but we are also open to all parents and fans of SunCreek Little League. Please join us if you have some new ideas or looking to volunteer. We would love to have you!

The Best of Little League

I'm blogging live from Alpenrose and the Little League Softball World Series today. Yes, they have free wi-fi and covered picnic tables to sit in the breeze and type away -- it's like heaven for me :)

Please think about bringing your family up here sometime in the next week. There are Little League families from all over the world hanging out, enjoying our treasured Alpenrose facility, soaking up Portland and the coast and Mt. Hood, and they are just about the friendliest folks you could meet. Oh, and there are some great softball games going on -- ten teams of 11-12 year olds battling for the right to play in the Semi-Finals on Tuesday, August 12, and the Championship on Wednesday, August 13, all LIVE on ESPN2. Have you ever seen a live ESPN broadcast? It's pretty cool, and your boys AND girls would love seeing the action.

Fall Ball 2008

As we work to post the Fall Ball 08 Registration form on the SunCreekLittleLeague.com website, we would encourage you to simply email suncreekLL@aol.com with your interested player's name, email, age and any info about past and future team placement that you would like us to know.

We can start a list and will gladly email out forms as they come available.

Questions about Fall Ball? Here is a quick overview:

Fall Ball provides an opportunity for our kids to continue playing baseball in good weather and continue to develop skills in a more relaxed format. Kids can play up one level, but cannot play down a level. For example, Fall Ball is a great time for a 10-11 year old to try out Majors from AAA this spring. Placement is based on 2009 season age. There are no evaluations for Fall Ball -- teams are formed on interest level and ability.

Players receive a hat and t-shirt. There are no make-ups for rain-outs. We are in a District 4 league, so games might be in Lake Oswego or Portland. Practice is light (it's up to the coach) as we acknowledge that kids are also playing other sports in the fall.

Thanks for your interest in SunCreek Little League. It's going to be a great fall and winter, as we prepare for the 2009 Season!

Fall Ball is Coming + August Meeting

Just as the summer season for our A and AA baseball players hits the midpoint, we are happy to announce that Fall Ball is in the works! SunCreek Little League will be again putting together teams for the District 4 Fall Ball season. Fall ball is a chance for kids to continue to build skills, get innings and swings in a less competitive atmosphere.

ALSO, please mark your calendar for August 12, 7pm, Pizza Caboose (on 185th) for a just-announced SunCreek Little League Board meeting. With a transition in board members, a summer meeting was called to get input from the SCLL community on ideas for the 2009 season, put a wrap on the 2008 season and coordinate Fall Ball. ALL members of the SunCreek Little League family are invited to all board meetings.

Local Baseball Update

Here is a quick update for local baseball fans -- if you're interested in the level of play outside of Little League, you might want to check these out:

1) The Tualatin Hills Babe Ruth 13 Year-Old All-Stars took the North Oregon title this weekend in The Dalles and advances to the regionals. The T-Hills team is coached by Greg Cero and features several former SunCreek LLers from the Mound Time team. The Regional tournament is July 27-August 2 in Kelso, Washington, only about an hour's drive away. Here is a link to the Pacific NW 2008 Babe Ruth 13 Year-Old Regional Tournament. The winner travels to New York for the Babe Ruth World Series!

2) The Westview Junior (11-12) and Senior (13-14) Federal teams, featuring alumni and friends of SCLL, advanced to their respective State tournaments beginning this Thursday. Jack's team plays at THPRD #1 at 1:30pm on July 24th. Junior Feds are in Canby at the same time.

Who Needs A Baseball Fix?

This is the busiest weekend of the summer around here in terms of sports tournaments. Every soccer field is being used by the 300 team "Beaverton Cup," there is an indoor hockey tournament at Indoor Goals, softball tournaments and baseball teams playing in District JBO, State Babe Ruth, and State Little League.

If you are in need of a baseball fix, and who isn't on a sunny, breezy summer afternoon (?!), here are some options:

1) SunCreek LL (thanks Coordinator Matt Beale!) is playing summer baseball with Hillsboro LL at West Union Fields on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

2) Tualatin Hills Babe Ruth 13 Year-Old All-Stars, with six former SCLL players, is competing in the State tournament in The Dalles this weekend. By the time you read this, they may have qualified for the Regional in Kelso, Washington! They were undefeated this week and playing in the semi-finals at noon, and the championship (if they win) at 6pm.

3) Westview Midget (9-10 year-olds), Junior (11-12 year-olds) and Senior (13-14 year-olds) JBO teams are competing in District and State tournaments this weekend -- each of these teams has SCLL alumni and friends. My son's Westview Senior Federal team plays for the District title today at 4pm at Newberg High School. The winner advances to the State tournament next weekend at THPRD.

I know there is more to do than watch baseball, but it's summer! :)

SCLL vs. MHLL Part II: Some Pix

Fittingly perhaps, my camera gave out only after a few pictures in the semifinal game of the 2008 Oregon District 4 Majors Baseball tournament. SunCreek LL faced a tough opponent, Murrayhill LL, with the shot at the championship game on the line. The score was 2-0 (MH) going into the bottom of the fifth inning due to some outstanding defensive plays by SCLL and solid pitching from Kevin L.

Murrayhill scored five runs in the fifth inning, but SunCreek got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Kevin and Jake N. beat out slow infield grounders and later scored. But it wasn't enough that night. SunCreek LL lost 7-2 to the team that is probably winning the District title right about now...

Oh, and my son's team lost last night, too :( They will now spend the weekend in Newberg, Oregon, in an 8-team tournament playing for a berth to the State Tournament the following weekend. Still lots of baseball to be played, thank goodness. And time to get some more batteries for my camera.

The SunCreek Little League Majors Baseball All-Stars' quest for an Oregon District 4 championship ended in the semfinals last evening with a 7-2 loss to Murrayhill Little League. MHLL will take on Tigard LL tonight in the final game of the tournament for the right to travel to Pendleton for the state championship.

Congratulations to the team, coaches and families, many of whom played on the District 4 winning team as 10 year-olds, and ironically, spent almost two weeks in Pendleton two summers ago winning the State Championship. It was an amazing run -- I sincerely hope you all enjoyed your Little League experience!

The SunCreek Little League Majors Baseball All-Stars ended seeding play in the 2008 Oregon District 4 tournament with an exciting 5-3 win over Cedar Mill Little League at Alpenrose this afternoon.

SCLL now must wait through tomorrow's final day of play with a 2-2 record and hope for some bracket magic to advance to Tuesday's semifinal game.

Zach L. took the mound for SunCreek LL and promptly recorded the first out of the game when a batted line drive zoomed right back to the mound and he gloved it right in front of his face -- what a way to start the game! He then struck out the next batter, and after an infield hit by Cedar Mill's Chad M., a fly to Zach G. in centerfield ended the inning.

With Chad pitching for Cedar Mill, the SCLLers managed only a walk and to beat out an infield hit nicely snagged by their shortstop before going down scoreless to end the first inning 0-0.

Cedar Mill threatened in the top of the second inning but Zach L. got two strikeouts and fly ball to shortstop to leave their runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd.

Scott B. smacked a single to left field and eventually stole home on a passed ball for SunCreek's first and only run in their half of the inning.

Jake N. came into pitch in the top of the third inning for and struck out two to keep the score 1-0 in favor of SCLL.

No runs were scored in the bottom half of the inning, but in the top of the fourth, defense by Evan I., catcher Ken C. and Zach G. in center field was overshadowed by a two-out, bases-loaded triple to the left field fence that brought the score to 3-1, CMLL over SCLL.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kevin L.'s solo homerun tightened the score to 3-2.

Mitch M.'s two-out, two-strike, hard smack up the middle sparked a rally that saw Jake score on Kevin's single, and then Scott (pinch-runner for Mitch) and him scoring on passed balls before the third out, score 5-3.

The game ended on a fly ball to leftfielder Dominic B. as CMLL was unable to score in the top of the sixth inning. Final score, 5-3 in favor of SunCreek Little League!

Majors All-Stars Game 3 Recap

The SunCreek Little League Majors Baseball All-Stars continued seeding play in the 2008 District 4 tournament with a tough loss to Tigard Little League, 18-8.

With glaring sunshine on Alpenrose's Main field, the SCLL team jumped out to 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jake N. slammed his second homerun of the tourney that scored Zach G. (infield hit) and Kevin L. (walk).

With Kevin on the mound, Tigard LL tied the score 3-3 after the first inning ended with a fielder's choice that Matthew K. snagged at shortstop and recorded the third out himself at second base.

In the top of the second inning, Kyle C. hit an infield dribbler to first base and stole all the way around, 4-3. Mitch M. (walk) scored after Matthew singled up the middle and Zach beat out an infield hit. Kevin's single scored Matthew, making the score 6-3 at the end of the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, Tigard LL banged out two homeruns and a combination of hits and bloops brought the score to 6-12.

Zach scored again in the top of the third inning when Matthew singled and Mitch reached first base and Zach became the special pinch runner for Mitch. 7-12.

Zach L.'s struck out the first batter in the bottom of the third inning, Evan I. made a great catch at second base, and Kyle recorded a strikeout to hold Tigard LL scoreless.

In the fourth inning, SunCreek scored its final run of the game when Jake doubled to right center and he crossed home plate with Zach L.'s fly to centerfield. Score: 8-12.

In the bottom of the inning, Tigard scored six runs (including a grand slam homerun) to bring the game to an end, final score 8-18.

The SunCreek Little League Majors All-Stars fell to Murrayhill Little League in the second game of seeding play last evening at Alpenrose West. SCLL now has one win and one loss in the 2008 Oregon District 4 tournament. The All-Stars will take on Tigard LL on Saturday at 4pm on the main field at Alpenrose.

The SunCreek LL Majors Baseball All-Stars started off the 2008 District 4 tournament by banging out a 10-8 win over Southwest Portland LL at Alpenrose East this evening.

SunCreek continues pool play on Thursday evening versus Murrayhill Little League on Alpenrose West at 5:45pm.

Kevin L. took the mound for SCLL and gave up one run before recording two strikeouts to end the inning.

In the bottom of the first, SCLL's Matthew K. started offensively with a double, then stole 2nd and 3rd bases, and stole home to record their first run of the 2008 tournament. Kevin's base hit up the middle, Jake N.'s mishandled fly ball, and Zach L.'s single down the 3rd base line made the bases loaded with one out. Kevin eventually scored on a passed ball and Ken C.'s fielder's choice scored Jake, making the score 3-1 at the end of the first inning.

Ken's great catch in left field and Kyle C.'s great catch in centerfield highlighted the defense in the top of the second inning. The bases then were loaded before Kevin recorded a key strikeout for the third out and leaving the SWPLL runners stranded on base.

In the bottom of the second inning, Matthew lined to center and Adam J. lined to left field. They both stole to second and third when Kevin popped a homerun over the centerfield fence, bringing the score to 6-1.

Jake then slammed another homerun, 7-1 in favor of SCLL.

SWPLL scored twice in the top of the third inning, and SCLL went three up, three down to make the score 7-3. Three more runs in the top of the fourth made it a 7-6 ballgame going into the fifth inning.

Evan I. walked to lead-off the inning, Matthew reached on an error and both scored on Kevin's double down the left field line. Kevin scored making it 10-6, SCLL over SWPLL.

In the bottom of the fifth, a two run homer by SWP brought the score to 10-8.

Zach L. came in relief of Kevin and pitched a three up, three down half, including a strikeout to end the game.

9/10 Softball Beats Murrayhill LL

The combined SunCreek LL/Wolf Creek LL 9/10 All-Star softball team completed the seeding round of the 2008 Oregon District 4 with a win over Murrayhill Little League, 15-9. The SCLL team finished 1-2 and will play Thursday for the chance to play in Friday's championship game.

Majors Baseball All-Stars Begin Play

The SunCreek Little League Majors Baseball All-Stars take the field tonight at Alpenrose in the opening game of the 2008 Oregon District 4 Tournament.

SCLL will play SWPortland LL at 5:15 on the Alpenrose East field.

With a solid core of returning players from the 2006 9/10 State Championship team, SunCreek looks to once again make noise in D4 action and challenge for the right to move on.

9/10 All-Stars Complete District 4 Play

The SunCreek Little League 9/10 All-Stars completed their run in the Oregon District 4 tournament with a loss to #1 seed Tigard LL 7-4 at Westlake Park in Lake Oswego.

SCLL finishes the 2008 postseason 1-4, but advanced out of Pool Play and didn't go easily out of the winner's bracket today. They came out on fire, scoring 3 runs in the first inning. They held Tigard scoreless in several innings; but for one big inning for them, they might have pulled it out.

Travis S. did great pitching the first 3 innings. Jayden H. pitched the rest of the game. Conner S. hit a triple and a double, scoring twice and with two RBI's.

Good luck to these 9 and 10 year olds as they enjoy the rest of the summer and see you next year in SunCreek Little League!

9/10 All-Stars Advance Out of Pool Play

SunCreek LL 9/10 All-Stars finished up pool play yesterday with a 11-4 loss to Raleigh Hills LL, but will continue into the winners bracket today due to a 4th place finish in their group.

Jayden H. scored SCLL's first run in the bottom of the 3rd inning after being hit by a pitch and stealing 2nd and 3rd. He crossed home plate again in the 5th inning with Jace S.'s infield hit. Travis S. stole home on a passed bal in the bottom of the 6th after he led off the inning with a single to centerfield. Zac S. scored SCLL's final run by stealing home, 11-4 RHLL over SCLL.

SCLL will take on the #1 seed from their pool Sunday, July 6, 9:30am at Westlake Park in Lake Oswego.

9/10 All-Stars Finish Pool Play Today

The SunCreek LL All-Stars finish up pool play today in the 2008 Oregon District 4 Tournament at Westlake Park in Lake Oswego. They will take on Raleigh Hills LL at noon.

The SunCreekers were handed their second loss of the tournament by Tigard LL yesterday, 10-0 at Westlake.

Travis S. pitched two shutout innings and some great defense by Jace S. at second base kept the score 0-0 going into the third inning. Tigard scored 4 runs in the bottom of the third inning, and six runs in the fourth inning to end the game. SCLL catcher Jayden H. made a dramatic put-out at home plate after he chased down a passed ball and beat the Tigard runner with the tag. But that wasn't enough to stop the Tigard scoring in the inning, and the game ended 10-0.

9/10 Honors Pix & Recap

Three SunCreek Little League teams saw District 4 action tonight on three different fields. I made it to two of them :) .

Both the 9/10 Honors and 11/12 Honors teams finished up their 2008 Little League seasons this evening.

The 9/10 Honors team, coached by Gary and Perry Peters, took on Cedar Mill LL at Cook Park in Tigard. After battling back from behind two runs in the third inning, the SunCreekers finally went down to defeat in seven innings, 8-6.

Lucas C.'s single up the middle in the bottom of the third scored Austin J. and Reed F. to tie the score at 4.

CMLL was held scoreless in the fourth inning, with Hayden H on the mound, and outstanding defense from Asher L. (throw out at 2nd base from centerfield) and Ben B. SCLL, however, went quietly in the bottom half of the inning.

Two strikeouts highlighted the top of the fifth inning and no runs for CMLL. In the bottom of the inning, Austin J. singled to right field and Reed F. beat out a throw to first. Kyle T.'s double to centerfield scored them both, 6-4 SCLL.

After two infield hits in the top of the sixth inning, Reed's outstanding catch in centerfield held the runners. However, a two-out double scored them both before a heads-up play caught a runner at third trying to steal. SCLL 6, CMLL 6.

In the second half of the sixth inning, Zack M. was hit by a pitch and then stole to 3rd base on passed balls. Unfortunately, the offense could not bring him home to score, and the game went into extra innings.

CMLL scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and held SCLL scoreless, so the game ended, final score 8-6 Cedar Mill LL advances out of Pool Play.
